Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a food bank and a food pantry?

A food bank collects surplus food from companies and households and passes it on to people and facilities that need it. A food pantry usually gives food to people who need it, free of charge, at a venue. Some pantries receive their food from food banks. The names are used differently by each group, so please check who can use each place and how you receive food on its page.

Can anyone use them?

It depends on the place. Some are only for single-parent families, people in financial hardship, families with children, people with a disability certificate, or older adults. Others are open to anyone who needs food. If a place says "residents of XX only", people who do not live in that ward or city cannot use it.

Do I need to book?

Many places require booking. Of the 75 places listed, 3 can be used without booking. Some places cannot give you food without a booking, so please check before you go.

What should I bring the first time?

A bag to carry the food home (some places ask for a large bag or a cooler bag) and ID are useful. Some places ask for documents that show you are eligible, such as a single-parent medical certificate, a child-rearing allowance certificate, or a document showing you are exempt from residence tax. Please check each place under "More details" or on its official page.

Does it cost anything?

Food pantries mainly give food free of charge. However, some places, such as children's cafeterias, ask for a meal fee or a donation. Please check each place to see whether there is a cost.

Where can I get help if my life is hard in general?

You can consult the Self-Reliance Support Office (jiritsu sōdan shien madoguchi) in the ward or city where you live. It is free, and they can think with you about work, housing, and money as well as food. Offices in Tokyo are listed on "Minna Tsunagaru Network", a project commissioned by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.
